Star light, star bright First star I see tonight I Wish I may  I wish I might Have the wish I wish tonight.                                  - Alan Moore Ever since I was a little child, I looked up to the sky. It fascinated my curious mind and satisfied my dreamy eyes.  Now that I grow a little each year I can sense the noose of responsibilities tightening around my neck. A year older, a little bolder. Shoutout to all the pressure I shoulder. In 1997 I wasn't human and in 2004 I was born, I am still here and going strong. So I make this wish upon the brightest star let me have what I've wished so far. ~Benecia Fernandes  Picture Credit: Greisy on Pinterest.

Kashmir of Karnataka

Karwar Railway Station  Karwar, a city that holds my childhood. A city full of warmth like a child wrapped in a blanket. A city where I’ve cried and laughed, lost and found. But above everything else, it’s a city that feels just like home.  When I was younger and even at present, summer holidays are most awaited. They start with a lot of convincing for a Karwar trip and end with precious memories. It is said that during the 19 th century, Rabindranath Tagore visited Karwar to meet his elder brother, Satyendranath Tagore who was posted in the city as the district collector. A young Tagore was mesmerized by the city’s beauty and it left an impact on him and his work.  He termed Karwar as the Kashmir of Karnataka, and the Karwar beach was recognized as Rabindranath Tagore Beach.     Kali River, Karwar In December, at the end of every year I convince my parents to take me to visit my cousins in Karwar. What started as a small vacay has turned into a yearly ri...

Silence Speaks Volumes

Image
Picture Credit: Benecia Fernandes  "Choosing a lover is a lot like choosing a therapist". This quote has got to be the reason for my silly obsession over this book.  The author laid a very hypnotic plot, which makes it a real page turner. It leaves you wanting, craving for more. The book is written in such an impeccable manner that it makes you want to unveil the truth. You feel you have it all figured out only to find out that you are nowhere near. The Silent Patient by Alex Michealides is a    psychological thriller where the protagonist murders her husband in cold blood and never speaks again. He is found bound to a chair with gunshot wounds in his face. Soon after she is convicted she paints a picture and titles it Alcestis, named after a heroine in Greek mythology who sacrifices her life to save her husband.  Theo is Alicia's therapist and is obsessed with her painting but why is he desperately going out of his way to get Alicia to speak again. The novel...

Another Arabian Delight

Image
Picture Credit: Benecia Fernandes  Many historians believe that Biryani was brought to India by the Mughals and the Arab traders. The mouth watering dish was first prepared in the Persian kitchens because their soldiers looked undernourished. The chefs were ordered to prepare a unique dish that has meat and rice, and thus after many experiments Biryani was discovered.  Well this post is about a particular Yemeni dish that is a real Arabian delight. It goes by the name Mandi. It is a popular authentic dish that contains of three components: chicken (or any other meat), a Yemeni spice mix called Hawaij and rice. The main technique that makes this dish different and more unique from your regular Biryani is that it is cooked in a taboon. Biryani is Hyderabad's forever love, but lately, Mandi is in the limelight. The best way to relish this dish is to sit in a circle with your friends or family and dive in with your bare hands. This may seem unethical to some, but food always taste...

Her Fall From Grace

Image
Picture Credit: ArtStation on Pinterest We’ve all heard about the scary monster Medusa, with a head full of venomous snakes, eyes that turn you to stone. We have been told countless times the tale of her fall from grace. But what we ignore is that beneath all the venom and stone was a fair maiden who devoted her life in the name of celibacy for her goddess, Athena.  A priestess in Athena’s temple, known for her beauty in the entire mundane. Athena’s followers would wait for a glimpse of the beauty and the furious goddess would squirm in jealousy. The maiden was unknown to what faith had stored for her, naive has a child she believed all lies. The god of sea and a known rival of Athena saw the beauty and was mesmerized, But Medusa rejected him and his  psyche shattered. He iced his bruised ego by raping Medusa at the temple, to humiliate Athena.  Medusa prayed to Athena for guidance and forgiveness but all she got in return was utter disgust.   Athena looked do...
